height=\"134\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>El repositorio Pelom Kura naci\u00f3 en 2023 luego de su reconocimiento formal por la <a href=\"https:\/\/meteoritical.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meteoritical Society<\/a>. Es el primero (por ahora el \u00fanico) repositorio oficial de meteoritos en Chile.<\/p>\n<p>\"Pelom Kura\" significa \"piedra luz\" en mapudungun. Hace referencia al brillo de una estrella fugaz y a la luz del conocimiento asociado al estudio cient\u00edfico de meteoritos.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00bfCu\u00e1l es el rol de un repositorio de meteoritos?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clasificar nuevos espec\u00edmenes de meteoritos.<\/li>\n<li>Proponer nombres de nuevos meteoritos a la Meteoritical Society.<\/li>\n<li>Conservar espec\u00edmenes de referencia.<\/li>\n<li>Prestar muestras para fines cient\u00edficos.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Antes de Pelom Kura:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No exist\u00eda en Chile un repositorio oficial de meteoritos, solo colecciones informales en universidades, Sernageomin y museos privados.<\/li>\n<li>Sin el respaldo de la Meteoritical Society, no se pod\u00eda hacer clasificaciones de meteoritos en Chile, lo cual fue una aberraci\u00f3n para un pa\u00eds gran proveedor de meteoritos. En consecuencia, las clasificaciones se realizaban en el extranjero generando una p\u00e9rdida de muchos espec\u00edmenes para la investigaci\u00f3n chilena.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Logros de Pelom Kura:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Su creaci\u00f3n validada por la Meteoritical Society en agosto 2023 ayuda a limitar la p\u00e9rdida de espec\u00edmenes gracias a la oferta de un servicio gratuito de clasificaci\u00f3n.<\/li>\n<li>Un trabajo colaborativo con varios cazadores de meteoritos ha permitido que a un a\u00f1o de la creaci\u00f3n de Pelom Kura, se clasificaron m\u00e1s de 60 meteoritos y se gestionaron varios pr\u00e9stamos para estudios cient\u00edficos.<\/li>\n<li>El repositorio cuenta con equipos de preparaci\u00f3n y an\u00e1lisis de muestras disponibles en el Instituto de Ciencias de la Tierra y la Unidad de Microscopia Electr\u00f3nica de la UACh. Colaboraciones internacionales apoyan los an\u00e1lisis m\u00e1s avanzados a veces requeridos.<\/li>\n<li>El repositorio apoya directamente proyectos de investigaci\u00f3n, trabajos de tesis de fill out and submit the sample request form. Granted samples will be the responsibility of the advisor.<\/li>\n<li>Loans are issued for 6 months with the possibility of extension if requested by the researcher prior to the loan return date. Extensions to the loan period must be approved by the repository curator.<\/li>\n<li>Unused portions of specimens issued for destructive analysis must be returned with a detailed description of analysis methods or reagents to which they were exposed. Please download, fill in, and return the Sample Return Form with your sample(s).<\/li>\n<li>Permission must be obtained before polished or thin sections are made from loaned samples. See a more detailed description and some pictures below.<\/p>\n<h2>Cariquima<img class=\"alignnone wp-image-1976\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ict.uach.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/cariquima.jpeg?resize=700%2C531\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"531\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/h2>\n<p>The Cariquima howardite shows a fresh glassy fusion crust on all sides and some flow lines. There is no evident weathering, suggesting a short time on the Earth's surface. Mass of the single specimen is 280 g.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"alignnone wp-image-1977\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ict.uach.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Bino-binder-scaled.jpg?resize=700%2C466\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"466\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Petrography<\/strong>: Cariquima is a polymict breccia of sub-mm\/mm sized eucrite and diogenite clasts in a fine matrix of related crystalline debris with typical grain size less than 50 \u03bcm. Contains aprox. 70 wt% eucrite materials and 30 wt% diogenite materials (based on average Al and Ca contents of the fusion crust). Eucrite components are mostly lithic fragments of basaltic eucrite, with only some clasts of cumulate eucrite. These clasts vary in texture from fine-grained porphyritic to coarse-grained subophitic. One cumulate eucrite clast presents a variolitic texture. The eucrite materials typically contain exsolved ferroan pigeonite and plagioclase, as well as minor and accessory phases such as silica, ilmenite, chromite, troilite, metal, zircon, fayalitic olivine, apatite and merrillite. Diogenite components are essentially orthopyroxene fragments, some with thin chromite veins. Shock evidence include the presence of melt pockets and veins with quenched texture in some pyroxene and silica grains and darkening of pyroxene by small blebs of metal and troilite. One round chondrule-like chromite-plagioclase assemblage was also observed in the studied polished thick section.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Geochemistry<\/strong>: Pyroxene overall Fe\/Mn (atomic) 29.8\u00b13.1 (N=77). Diogenitic low-Ca pyroxene Fs<sub>21.7\u00b12.9<\/sub>Wo<sub>2.1\u00b10.7 <\/sub>(N=18), Ca-pyroxene Fs<sub>16.6<\/sub>Wo<sub>38.8<\/sub> (N=1). Eucritic low-Ca pyroxene Fs<sub>47.5\u00b19.0<\/sub>Wo<sub>5.7\u00b13.2 \u00a0<\/sub>(N=36), Ca-pyroxene exsolution lamellae Fs<sub>33.7\u00b112.4<\/sub>Wo<sub>34.4\u00b17.6 <\/sub>(N=12). Plagioclase An<sub>87.8\u00b14.8<\/sub>Ab<sub>12.2\u00b14.8 <\/sub>(N=42). Chromite Cr# = 0.77\u00b10.06 (N=8).<\/p>\n<h2>Ureilite (not yet officially named)<\/h2>\n<p><img class=\"alignnone wp-image-1978\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ict.uach.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/handsample2-scaled.jpg?resize=700%2C394\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><br \/>\nThree meteorite fragments were found within half a meter of each other. They are highly consolidated desert polished rocks, which lack fusion crust. Two fits well together. Density is about 3.3 and total mass is 860 g. Individual masses are 615, 169 and 76 g. Sample cutting with a diamond blade was rather difficult, suggesting the presence of a hard component (diamond).<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"alignnone wp-image-1979\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ict.uach.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/cruzados-collage.jpg?resize=700%2C358\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"358\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img class=\"alignnone wp-image-1982\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ict.uach.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Reflejada-sin-bordes-scaled.jpg?resize=700%2C329\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"329\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Thin section in cross-polarized transmitted light (above) and reflected light (below). Sample is 4 mm wide.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Petrography<\/strong>: One thin section examined. Sample dominated by fine to medium-grained (0.5-2 mm) interlocked anhedral-subhedral crystals of olivine (~50 vol.%) and pigeonite (~25 vol.%) with abundant 120\u00ba triple junctions and without preferred orientation. Olivine and pigeonite show reduced margins. An interconnected network of Fe hydroxides (~15 vol.%) containing rare kamacite and up to 20 \u00b5m thick occur along silicate grain boundaries. Fe hydroxides are also present as \u00b5m-size blebs (~5 vol.%) within silicate rims, mostly olivine. Interstitial aggregates of carbon material are also widespread (~5 vol.%). They reach up to 200 \u00b5m in size and Raman measurements indicate that they are mostly made of micrometric diamonds and graphite. No large graphite flakes were observed. Some pigeonite and olivine grains show weak undulatory extinction. Twinning is also observed in some silicate grains, mostly in pigeonite and rarely in olivine. Overall, weathering grade is moderate and shock grade is low to moderate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Geochemistry<\/strong>: Olivine cores (N=10) Fa<sub>21.3\u00b10.7<\/sub>, FeO\/MnO=40.2\u00b13.9 (wt. ratio), Cr<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>3<\/sub>=0.74\u00b10.08 wt.%, CaO=0.33\u00b10.05 wt.%. Olivine rims down to Fa2.5 and FeO\/MnO= 5.4. Pigeonite cores (N=7) En<sub>72.3\u00b10.5<\/sub>Wo<sub>9.8\u00b10.2<\/sub>Fs<sub>17.8\u00b10.5<\/sub>, Cr<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>3<\/sub>=1.3\u00b10.1 wt.%, Pigeonite rims up to En<sub>83.7<\/sub>.
